A brief critique on speaker Sonam Tenphel

MP Khenpo Sonam Tenphel with his special buddy TY was born at Regay, Kham in 1974. After schooling he joined Nari Tashi Choeling monastery and studied preliminary Buddhist teachings, meditation and rituals.

In exile, he joined Ngagyur Nyingma Institute (Shedra) of Namdroling monastery, Bylakuppe, and received Higher Secondary, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist sutras and Tantras from the institute.

He served as a disciplinarian at Namdroling monastery for three years and received Doctorate in Buddhist Philosophy (equivalent to Ph. D) in 2011.

He was elected in the 14th, 15th, 16th TPiE from Nyingma sect. He was the Deputy Speaker to Speaker PT during the 15th Parliament and he had the opportunity to learn from former speaker PT. As a parliamentarian, his code of conduct and his behavior in the house was respectable as a monk.

As a Speaker, he was found to be doing justice in giving time to both the factions of MPs to criticize and to counter the criticism in the house. Yet, when Tenpa Yarphel insulted Nechung and Gaden Phodrang with baseless allegation, he as the Speaker of the house failed to stop him then and there. He even couldn’t make him own his mistake and apologize for the same in the house.

The house which is convened twice a year is to talk sense on the bigger issues of Tibet and Tibetans, but its turning into the discourse of the differences within the individual MPs and LS in the house.

As a speaker, doesn’t he have the responsibility to change the course of the discussion or to stop them from petty fights within themselves? The level of the discussion is getting lower each year, he should man up and fix it!

As a responsible MP he should raise the issue of drinking and rampant homosexuality (or thigh fuck to be precise ) and pedophilia in Tibetan monasteries.

Also this speaker ran away from the hotel even after he promised to see the protestors outside in Washington DC and listen to their grievances regarding PT termination. That is cowardice. That sneaking out like a snake is a testament that he supported LS simply because they are Khampa chikpa. That is negative regionalism. Shame on you.
